Skin Allergies
Coping With Skin Allergies
Skin rashes can be caused by a variety of factors such as infection, medications, or problems with your immune system. You have a skin allergy if there is an allergen triggering your skin condition. We will discuss the common skin allergies below.
Relief Is Within Reach
There are a variety of interventions available for these skin allergies that can help give you relief from your symptoms and possibly reduce your medication use.
Talk to your allergist, who has the specialized training and expertise in these conditions, to determine which treatment is best for you.
Hives (Urticaria)
These are raised red patches of skin that are usually itchy. If you have hives for the first time, it could be due to a food, medication, or insect allergy. It can also be due to contact with an allergen such as plants, latex, or animals. Having an infection or being sick can also trigger hives. If you have hives most days of the week for more than 6 weeks, you may have chronic hives that may not have a specific cause. Talk to your doctor to determine what specific treatment you may need.
Angiodema
This is a skin allergy involving deeper layers of the skin. Symptoms may include puffiness of the face, hands, feet or genitalia. There may also be some slight redness of the skin. This may be part of a serious allergic reaction and can be associated with trouble breathing or throat tightness. A common cause of angioedema is allergies, especially if you have it for the first time. More rarely, diseases that run in families can cause angioedema. Consult with your allergist to see if you need allergy skin testing or blood work to determine the cause.
